Benefits of CCTV
Sandee Blackburn’s unfortunate plight is still all over the news. Her mother, Vicki Blackburn, is still searching for answers to her murder. But Ms. Blackburn’s quest for answers may soon be over as CCTV security systems could provide some valuable leads for the crime.
Click here for more details about the news.
Sandee was captured on different CCTV cameras as she walked along Juliet St and Boddington St on her way home.
It was after nearly three months that Ms. Blackburn had to come face to face with the gruesome reality that her daughter had been murdered just a bit off from home as she was on her way from work.
Neighbors who witnessed the crime tried to save Shandee, but she had sustained multiple stab wounds that almost left her dead instantly. She was 23 years old.
Ms. Blackburn was thankful to those who tried to help her daughter, stating that Shandee was not left alone when she died.
The hunt is still on for Shandee’s killer. However, the authorities are looking into evidences that have been produced by the CCTV cameras around the crime scene.
Is there hope? With valuable clues left by the CCTV camera footage and other information, there certainly is. This makes for a strong case as to why it’s important to have a good CCTV and security system in place.
The CCTV camera and security system advantage
There is no doubt to the indispensability of CCTV cameras and other forms of security systems. They offer tremendous advantages including:
Crime deterrence – While the CCTV cameras around the place where Shandee was murdered did nothing to stop the crime, CCTV cameras have proven to be effective crime deterrent in many places around the globe. Criminals have been stopped at their tracks upon seeing CCTV cameras and security systems set in place where they intended to carry out their heinous plan.
Peace of mind – Having a CCTV system installed certainly does a lot to make people feel more secure. Homeowners feel safer knowing that they have a set of virtual eyeballs keeping an eye out on their properties for them. Business owners feel secure knowing that they can monitor their employees and business even when they’re away.
For prosecution – CCTV footages can be used as evidences when prosecuting criminals.

You simply can’t leave things to chance. It’s hard to imagine people allowing the things they hold dear such as their loved ones, their properties or their business vulnerable to risk. That’s why you and I should make a point of safeguarding the things that are important to us any way we can.
And some of the ways we can protect the things that matter to us is by way of setting up security measures including some of today’s sophisticated security systems.
Securing your property or your business goes beyond conventional door locks. These days, as burglars grow more sophisticated in their cunning ways, there’s a growing need for more sophisticated equipment to thwart intrusion.
Without a good security system, you leave your property or business vulnerable. Such is the case with the recent high profile theft that happened in a place where security is supposed to be riddled with everything high-tech and secure.
Very recently, huge storage areas of drugs, guns and other illegal stuff that were seized by Australias Customs Service have been burglarised. The incident has been attributed to weak security measures. This comes as quite a shock as you would image the Customs Service to secure such an area rigorously.
The vast stores in question included 12,792 items seized by the agency between 2011 and 2012. About 90 percent of those items were drugs, tobacco and firearms as recorded by the Custom’s Detained Goods Management System. Each one of the items has been classified and processed.
In 2012, the Custom stores have been reported by the Australian National Audit Office as having serious security weakness. The weakness has been observed in the agency’s facilities across NSW, Victoria, Western Australia and the ACT.
As a case in point, the audit reportedly found an armoury that has been left open each working day, allowing staff to come and go effortlessly. It was a negligence on the part of the Customs that is against the internal gun safety rules.
Among other things, the Customs has also been found to have slack management of computer cataloguing systems, as well as gaps in CCTV surveillance.
What happened at the Customs was utterly unacceptable. If security lapse has been found in one of the government’s agencies where security is supposed to be tight, isn’t it likely to be found elsewhere?

The world is a dangerous place. Nothing can guarantee our children’s safety, but with effective monitoring strategies, we can have some peace of mind.
Improving safety measures at home is especially helpful when we need to be away, leaving our children alone or with a nanny. What follows are some practical tips for making our home, possibly other places, safer for our kids.
A checklist of things you should do when going away
There will be instances when you need to go away and leave the children alone by themselves or with an accompanying adult. These days you simply can’t trust anyone, so you need to take extra steps to make sure the kids are safe.
Keep in touch. Make a point of always calling the kids on the phone to see how they’re doing. If the kids need to step out of the house, instruct them to call you as soon as they leave and when they’re back.
Leave important information. Leave important phone numbers by the phone or post them on the fridge. Phone numbers should include those for the fire department, relatives, doctors and neighbors who can provide immediate help when kids are in distress.
Teach the kids what to do in times of emergency. Teach them who to call and what to say when they are hurt, when a fire broke out or when an intruder is trying to get into the house.
Set proper expectations and rules. Set very clear instructions for your kids when they are home alone such as whether they can use the Internet or they can invite friends over.
Kids mature in different ways, and there’s no exact age when kids are ready to be left alone at home. It all boils down to proper training. Also, keep in mind that there could be certain state laws that don’t allow children to be left home alone at a certain age, so be sure to be informed about such laws.
If you feel that the kids are matured and ready enough to be left alone and you are comfortable about it, talk to them about it. You could do some training with the kids on things to do when they are alone before finally leaving them on their own.
Setting up monitored alarm system at home
These days, there are lots of devices that can help us monitor our precious belongings, our home and our kids even when we are very far away from them. The past few years have seen the explosion and improvement of monitored alarm systems. We’ve also seen the growth of their importance from just being a necessity to utility for most families.
And with the alarming reports about intrusion at home, it’s even more important these days to install monitored alarms, especially if there are certain times when kids are needed to be left home alone.
Installing monitored alarms provide lots of benefits including:
Peace of mind for when you’re away and the kids are alone
A central monitoring system is alerted when the alarm goes off so the authorities can respond right away
24/7 protection so that no matter how long you need to be away, you can rest assured that the kids are out of harm’s way.
Kids should always be accompanied by their parents at home, but for times when you need to be away, keep these tips in mind.
It was just before 3:00 PM in Boston on 15 April, 2013. Hundreds of people are gathered to watch the annual Boston Marathon. The crowd was ecstatic as some of the first athletes to finish the race were nearing the finish line.
Within seconds, the first bomb exploded a few meters from the finish line. The explosion was so powerful it knocked down a couple of runners who were about to cross the finish line. It also threw spectators to the ground and shattered windows on the surrounding buildings.
Within seconds, the second bomb exploded with equal force, causing more devastation and causing the already shaken crowd to panic even more.
The aftermath of both blasts left a gruesome scene of gore and terror, leaving three dead and over 140 injured. But humanity never relented. Out of the evil came human nature’s finest moment when men and women risked their own lives just to save others and provide courage to the terrified.
Watch the story here.
America and the whole world are now knocking on legislation’s door to expedite justice. People are now also crying for more stringent security measures in the streets to ensure that nothing like the terrible attack in Boston on Monday would ever happen anywhere again.
The need for more ‘eyes’ in the streets
Despite the huge number of videos on Monday’s Boston explosion that spread on the Internet, there was very little evidence to go around to pinpoint who planted those bombs in the scene.
The incident has all the more reminded legislation to set up more security camera systems such as CCTV cameras that are capable of capturing wide angle videos. Security cameras that are strategically placed in the streets will not only deter crimes; they could also be used to pinpoint perpetrators.
Monday’s incident has also put the authorities on the spotlight for failing to implement tighter security measures during a crowded event. Many are asking why police and security personnel visibility was noticeably low during the event.
The Americans are now calling legislation and businesses for more security camera systems to be installed around every city to thwart anything similar to Monday’s incident from ever happening again.
With very few videos to go around to spot suspects or anything that could point to the culprits, the authorities have been blind-sided, perhaps causing the investigation to be more challenging than it should.
Here in Sydney, people are now questioning whether it’s time to beef up security measures by installing more security camera systems and CCTV cameras around key areas of the city.
Do you think that the government should step up efforts to tighten security in Sydney even more following Monday’s incident in Boston? Should more CCTV cameras and other surveillance equipment be mandatorily installed in commercial centres?

CCTV systems are some of the modern day’s wonders. These days, they’re everywhere in Sydney, from factories to offices, and even in many homes, providing a set of virtual eyes that scan the place 24/7, making many people feel much more secure.
The CCTV systems of today are almost a quantum leap from the video security systems of 10 years ago. Surveillance cameras are now more compact, less conspicuous, more portable and are more capable of capturing high quality images and videos.
And with the explosion of competing CCTV systems providers, CCTV systems are now even more affordable.
However, many business owners and households are not so keen to implement CCTV systems. One of the reasons why they’re hesitating is that they find the technology to be intimidating, mainly because they don’t understand how CCTV systems work.
If you’re one of those who first need to understand the how before embracing the technology, here’s a quick overview of how CCTV systems work.
CCTV or Closed Circuit Television is composed of one or several digital video cameras. These cameras send videos, images and even audio to a monitoring system. The videos can either be recorded for later viewing or can be viewed live by a full-time security personnel (in the case of companies who have 24/7 manned security stations).
As opposed to public broadcast video cameras, CCTV cameras are linked exclusive to an internal hub where the feeds or transmitted images can be viewed in multiple monitors.
The early CCTV cameras have many shortcomings. They used to be clunky, heavy, featured blurry low definition images and are very complicated to operate. Most CCTV cameras in the early days capture videos in black and white. They also lacked the ability to zoom images for a better close up view of the subject, and they didn’t pan, which greatly limited their viewing angles.
Today, most CCTV systems in Sydney are equipped with cutting edge features such as high definition images, and a better zoom range to more easily and more accurately identify any target. Many of today’s CCTV systems even come with motion sensor to automatically track movements within its area of coverage.
Many CCTV security systems are now also equipped with wireless capabilities, eliminating the need for cumbersome and unsightly cables. This type of security system utilise radio technology to send and receive audio and video signals. However, the downside to using wireless CCTV systems is that in certain conditions such as during storms, video reception is sometimes compromised.

One of the benefits of the advances in technology is the enhancement of security. Today, we don’t only depend on security personnel but also on electronic devices that are state-of-the-art and effective. Closed circuit television cameras or CCTV cameras are used in many situations in order to provide video surveillance. Universities, businesses and even government institutions use CCTV systems to monitor the students, employees and other people. It’s also used to prevent crimes. But, the use of CCTV monitoring is not without a debate.
• Deter Crime
CCTV systems help in preventing all kinds of crime from an employee stealing from the office supply room to a theft from a jewelry store. If the employees know that there are cameras then they are much less likely to try and steal from the office. If a criminal see that the store has cameras then they would be more likely to just move on to an easier target.
• Maintain documentation and evidence
The latest CCTV systems have not only video capabilities, but audio as well. This allows the cameras to be more effective than ever at offering a record of how things happen. In legal cases, eyewitnesses can forget some information or keep in mind the order of the events as they happened. However with CCTV, the authorities or the court can see the real series of activities as they occurred.
• Save a lot of money
Some companies are investing less money on security employees. These companies are able to successfully pass those benefits along to their clients with reduced costs. Certain CCTV cameras may also allow organizations to do away with costly time keeping techniques, again enabling organizations to reduce expenses.
• CCTV not always reliable
Unfortunately, CCTV isn’t usually able to show every part of a building. Even if the cameras are placed properly, there is no assurance that the cameras will capture any criminal activity or undesirable actions. The fact is, these cameras can be covered with sticking something over the lenses like gum or spray painting. As such, all actions will not be recorded. If however you have a high quality state of the art alarm system installed on your premises you are more likely to be able to cover yourself if the CCTV cameras are vandalized in any way.
• Invasion of privacy and distrust
Some critics of CCTV systems argue that these are tools that invade the privacy of the students and employees. It also assumes that the students and employees will do something wrong which is why there is a need to monitor and record all their moves.
Like any other device, CCTV cameras have advantages and disadvantages. The company can decide better when it knows the advantages and disadvantages of CCTV systems and the priorities of the company.
With the increasing crime rate and burglaries, installing home security devices such as alarm systems can never be too much, take it from a 40 year old man who was stabbed to near death in his own home. Employee theft costs warehouses a fortune each and every year, though the warehouses targeted most are those that have made little effort to properly secure their facility. Once a warehouse institutes a comprehensive security plan, there should be zero loss experienced, so if you are sick and tired of seeing stock disappear from your warehouse, take some steps to clean it up. The following ideas will all help reduce the amount of employee theft taking place at your warehouse.
There is no reason for everyone in your warehouse to have access to all of your assets, so apart from products that need to be kept accessible and on display, keep all other products securely stored and locked away somewhere. Only allow authorised people access to the storage room, and keep track of who comes and goes from the room and when.
